It’s interesting sometimes to project oneself in what we think the future will be and try to foresee what it will allow. Predicting the future is however not the easiest task but there is a few predictions that have a very high probability of happening.
Among them, and it will deeply change the way we do things, the WEB OF DATA (or semantic web) is likely to be one of this century’s major breakthroughs.
The web of data defines the current world wide web supplemented with semantic information on every data that is published.
A table would no longer be a graphic box with text and numbers but somehow a software will be able to read the user-defined meaning of this data to b able to process it for something else.
Supposing that semantic data becomes omnipresent, issues of SOURCE RELIABILITY and SYNCHRONISATION are obviously going to be problems. But more interesting, we will be able to do thousands of things and METRICS can be expected to be an inevitable field of interest. When you have all this data, you want to do something interesting out of it. So more generally speaking AUTOMATIC DATA RETRIEVAL would be the interest of many.
In a world where data is available everywhere, a world that keeps you from interpreting it “manually”, the tendency is clearly to remove the human from his former position of unnecessary data interpretor and re-user. In that same fashion, AUTOMATIC DATA INPUT may drop in the party since the input of data in most cases could be done without human intelligence. The layground for this is extensively getting prepared with all the current efforts in ad-hoc sensor networks. It’s nothing else that the ability to collect data anywhere and manage its collection or use withing a network.
